Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries in Phuket: A Local's Guide
Responsible Travel
May 2026
As a local host, one of the most common questions I get is: "Where can I see elephants without hurting them?" In 2026, the answer is clearer than ever, but you still need to know what to look for.
The "No Riding" Gold Standard
In Phuket, truly ethical sanctuaries have moved beyond just "no riding." They now focus on "hands-off" observation. The goal is to let elephants be elephants—socializing, bathing, and foraging without human interference.
✅ What to Look For
- ✓ No riding or performances
- ✓ Large, natural forested areas
- ✓ Elephants socialize with each other
- ✓ Limited visitor numbers per day
❌ Red Flags
- ✕ Any mention of "trekking"
- ✕ Elephants in chains or small pens
- ✕ Bullhooks or sharp tools
- ✕ Washing elephants in concrete pools
Recommended Sanctuaries
While I encourage you to do your own research, these two have consistently set the standard for welfare in Phuket:
- Phuket Elephant Sanctuary (Paklok): The pioneer of ethical tourism on the island. They provide a final home for retired working elephants.
- Tree Tops Elephant Reserve: Located in the south, they focus purely on observation and education. No bathing, no feeding—just watching them live naturally.
"The best memory isn't a photo of you touching an elephant; it's the memory of seeing them rumble and play with their herd in the forest."
