Tipping in Phuket: The Ultimate Etiquette Guide for 2026
One of the most frequent questions we get from travelers is: "How much should I tip in Phuket?" Unlike the strict tipping culture in the US or the non-existent one in Japan, Thailand sits in a comfortable middle ground. Tipping is never mandatory, but it is always appreciated—and in 2026, as the cost of living rises, a small gesture goes a long way.
Once you've cleared customs, you'll need to choose an airport transfer to reach your hotel.

Helping you discover the authentic Phuket
1. Spas & Massage Therapists
Massage is incredibly affordable in Phuket, but the therapists often rely on tips to supplement very low base salaries. If you're visiting one of the Old Town parlors or a beach-side shack:
- Standard 1-hour massage: 50 THB is a great tip.
- High-end Spa session: 100 THB is appropriate.
Local Tip: Always hand the cash directly to your therapist with a "Wai" (slight bow with hands together) to show your appreciation.
2. Restaurants & Bars
The "Service Charge" is the most confusing part of dining in Thailand. Look at the bottom of the menu or your bill. If you see "Prices are subject to 10% Service Charge and 7% VAT," the tip is already included in your total. You do not need to leave anything extra, though leaving the small coin change is common.
In smaller local restaurants where no service charge is added, leaving 20-50 THB for a good meal is generous.
3. Transport: Grab & Taxis
Drivers in Phuket do not expect tips. If your fare is 185 THB, giving 200 THB and telling the driver to "Keep the change" (Mai pen rai) is the standard way to handle it. If you use the Grab App, tipping 10-20 THB through the app is a kind gesture for drivers navigating through Patong Beach traffic.
4. Hotel Staff
- Porters: 20-40 THB per bag is standard.
- Housekeeping: 20-50 THB left on the pillow or side table each morning is highly appreciated.
