If you are staying fewer than five nights, choose the west coast. You will lose less time in transport, get better beach access, and have more choices when weather, mood, or dinner plans change.
If you are staying a week or longer, the best answer may be a split stay: west coast first for beaches and sightseeing, then east coast or Panwa/Ao Yon for a slower finish. If you are a repeat visitor or long-stay traveler, the east coast becomes much more interesting because you are no longer trying to solve every Phuket experience from one hotel.
