Phuket Smart Bus & Songthaews: The 101 Guide

May 3, 2026 10 Min Read By Pom

One of the biggest complaints about Phuket is the "Taxi Mafia" and the high cost of transport. But in 2026, you don't need to spend 800 THB to cross the island. If you have a bit of patience and a sense of adventure, Phuket’s public bus system is more connected than ever.

This guide covers the two main systems: the modern Phuket Smart Bus (which hugs the coast) and the traditional Blue Songthaews (which connect the beaches to Phuket Town).

1. The Phuket Smart Bus

The Smart Bus is a modern, air-conditioned coach service that runs along the west coast. It is the most economical way to get from the airport to the beaches.

  • Price: 100 THB flat rate (no matter how far you go).
  • Payment: In 2026, most buses accept **Visa/Mastercard Tap-to-Pay**, Rabbit Card, or PromptPay QR codes. Cash is becoming rare.
  • Schedule: Usually every hour from 06:00 to 23:00. Check the official tracker for live updates.

2. The Blue Songthaews (Blue Buses)

These are the iconic open-air "bus-trucks" you'll see everywhere. They don't have a strict schedule, but they are incredibly reliable and cheap.

The Ranong Road Hub: All Blue Buses start and end in Phuket Old Town on **Ranong Road** (near the Central Market). From here, they "spoke" out to the major beaches.

  • Price: 30 - 50 THB. Pay the driver *at the end* of your journey.
  • How to Catch One: Stand on the side of the main road heading in your direction and wave your hand down (palm facing down). To get off, press the buzzer located on the ceiling.

3. Quick Cheat Sheet: Which one to use?

Use Smart Bus If:

  • ✓ Going from Airport to a Beach
  • ✓ Traveling Beach to Beach (e.g. Patong to Karon)
  • ✓ You want A/C and Wi-Fi

Use Songthaew If:

  • ✓ Going from Phuket Town to a Beach
  • ✓ You are on a strict budget (<50 THB)
  • ✓ You want the "authentic" local experience

Pro Tips for 2026

Download the Apps: While the buses are "old school," the tracking is not. Use the **ViaBus App** to see where your bus is in real-time. It covers most of the routes shown in our map above.

Watch the Sun: Songthaews stop running around 17:00 or 18:00. If you are at the beach for sunset, you will likely need a Grab or Bolt to get back to Phuket Town.
