The Best Time to Visit Phuket:
Month-by-Month Weather Guide

May 3, 2026 18 Min Read By Pom

One of the most common questions I get as a local host is: "When is the best time to come?" Most people will tell you to come in December when the sky is blue and the water is glass. They aren't wrong, but they're only telling you 1% of the story.

Phuket doesn't have "good" and "bad" weather; it has seasons of experience. If you want the most beautiful sunsets, come in November. If you want to surf world-class waves for pennies, come in August. If you want to join the world's biggest water fight, you must be here in April.

In this guide, I’ve distilled 17 years of Phuket weather patterns into an interactive dashboard to help you choose the right month for your style, budget, and risk tolerance.

Pom's Verdict for January:

"If you want the postcard-perfect Phuket, this is it. But be prepared to share your beach with 1,000 others and book your Grab well in advance."

The High Season: November to April

This is when Phuket is at its most famous. The monsoon winds switch direction, blowing from the northeast, which brings cool, dry air and perfectly flat seas to our western beaches like Surin and Kata.

The Peak (December & January)

The weather is statistically perfect. Rain is a rarity, and the humidity is at its lowest. However, this perfection comes at a price. Hotel rates can be 3x higher than the low season, and the popular hidden coves are no longer very hidden. If you visit during this time, my advice is to head to the northern beaches like Mai Khao to escape the madness.

The Hottest Month: April & Songkran

April is the hottest month of the year. The humidity builds as the island waits for the monsoon to break. But mid-April brings **Songkran**, the Thai New Year. It is the world's biggest water fight, and Patong transforms into a massive, soaking-wet street party. It's an essential bucket-list experience, but don't expect to stay dry for even a second.

The "Green" Season: May to October

Formerly called the "Rainy Season," we locals call it the Green Season because the jungle turns an impossible shade of neon emerald. Many travelers avoid this time, which is exactly why you should consider it.

Why I Love the Low Season

  • Service: In December, staff are exhausted. In June, they have time to chat, give you better tables, and share secret tips.
  • Prices: You can stay in a 5-star pool villa in Bang Tao for the price of a standard room in January. Check our Budget Calculator to see the massive difference.
  • Surfing: From May to October, the west coast gets consistent swell. Kata Beach becomes a surf hub with a great community vibe.

The Critical Warning: Red Flags

Safety First: During the Green Season, the riptides on the west coast are lethal. If you see a **Red Flag** on the beach, do not enter the water. Even if it looks calm and sunny, the undercurrent can pull a professional swimmer out to sea in seconds. Stick to your hotel pool or visit the protected east coast bays.

Conclusion: Which Month is Best for You?

If you have the budget and want guaranteed sun, January is your winner. If you are a digital nomad or budget traveler looking for the best value, May or October are the sweet spots. And if you want to see the "other 99%" of Phuket in its most raw, natural beauty, don't be afraid of a little tropical rain in September.
